Sheltering Sky

"He did not think of himself as a tourist; he was a traveller. The difference is partly one of time, he would explain. Whereas the tourist generally hurries back home at the end of a few weeks or months, the traveller, belonging no more to one place than to the next, moves slowly, during periods of years, from one part of the earth to another. Indeed, he would have found it difficult to tell, among the many places he had lived, precisely where it was he had felt most at home". PAUL BOWLES

It's all very West Wing. At times I feel like Josh or Sam will come out of an office. Two weeks into my job and I am really enjoying it. I have this horizontal position within the ESDP conduct capability, meaning that I will be supporting the head of operations in overseeing all civilian missions. So one moment I’m in a meeting on a bombing in Afghanistan, next I am discussing the movements of Israel in Gaza or how to persuade member states to send a mission to Guinea Bissau. Next week I have this James Bond training -compulsory before going to places: four days on counter surveillance, crossing checkpoints, first aid, kidnappings, etc. The team is very new and so is the actual Capability, so there is a lot to do around. But at first glance the hierarchy seems pretty motivated, dynamic and open to new ideas. Very exciting times to work for the European Security and Defence Policy.
